INNING № 4
I could say I did it because right field is a dead sea of boredom and isolation.
I could say I did it because my father came to every game and never said a damn word. Before, during, after.
There was a time when they believed the curveball to be an optical illusion. The things of this world are supposed to abide by certain rules. These rules are supposed to apply even when it appears they do not. The fault lies in how you see it, not in how it is. Therefore the ball does not curve. Life magazine said so in 1941, and they had the pictures to prove it. But the ball does curve. They know it now. And they also know the human eye isn’t made to see something move in such a way. Not in sixty feet, six inches. Not in less than a second. One eye sees the ball in one place and the other sees it in another, and somewhere in between, something gets lost. And so now they know the real truth. It’s both. The fault lies in both. How you see it; how it is.
