INNING № 7
I could say I did it because I knew better than him just how unhittable he was that night—they all knew what was coming—and that made me feel like I alone possessed the hand of Providence.
I could say I did it because I could see the rest of my life spread out before me:
—a short period where I pretend I am a free man…
—acquire a trade…
—acquire a 4WD truck I love more than anything…
—account for each/every moment, where I’m supposed to be + exactly how long…
—find some woman to share this with me…
—make babies…
—watch them make all the mistakes I made and worse…
—eat too much, drink too much, get fat…
—die…
The prom had nothing to do with it. I would have done it anyway. The trouble with a girl like Maria Espinosa is she will take things to their extremes just to show she is better than everybody else. Really she is no better than the rest of us. Everybody gives her credit for giving herself to God afterwards but I say purity in excess is a vice in itself. Sister Evangeline. Whoever heard of the homecoming queen, straight out of school, wedding her inviolate, broken-hearted self to God? That’s a play-pretend, too.
